Renault to drive in five new cars in India by 2013

Bullish about the Indian auto sector, French carmaker Renault is planning to launch two new models in India by 2011 on its global platforms, Renault Fluence and Renault Koloes.

"Renault is moving aggressively to set the stage for the launch of their cars in India," a company official told Mail Today. "Renault will introduce the "Fluence" Luxury sedan by May 2011, followed by "Koloes" (4x4 Crossover) by October 2011," the official said. Apart from that, Renault, by 2013, will follow a full range of cars from the global portfolio. This will include three more cars , which includes a small hatchback as well.

 French foray
  • Renault will introduce Fluence sedan by May 2011 followed by Koloes by October 2011
  • Fluence will compete with likes of Corolla, Civic, Cruze and Laura - all in the range of Rs 11-Rs 15 lakh
  • Fluence will be available in both diesel and petrol
The Fluence is a mid size sedan and will be the first solo offering of Renault from its global stable. According to industry insiders, Renault Fluence will compete with Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Chevrolet Cruze and Skoda Laura, all priced in the range of Rs 11 lakh to Rs 15 lakh.

The company is expected to price the car around Rs 12 lakh for the base model. Fluence will be available in both diesel and petrol engine options. The petrol engine will be introduced in two variants that are 1.6 16 V 110 hp and 2.0 16V 140 hp, while the diesel version will be available in five variants in 1.5 litre engine category.

However, the company will give more specification during the launch. Renault will start producing the sedan Fluence from March 2011. The Renault Koleos is a five seated crossover SUV and the company is planning to pitch it against the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Honda CR-V and Hyundai's Santa Fe (Rs 20,95,000 onwards). The car is expected to be priced at Rs 20 lakh. The firm is also planning to launch its small hatchback by 2012, which will be positioned against Hyundai i10.

Until April 2010, Renault had its presence in India in form of a JV with M&M. In April, Renault restructured the JV and decided to come up solo with its own manufactured, marketed and branded cars in India.

The company has already built a new manufacturing plant in Chennai in a 50-50 joint venture with Nissan with an investment of Rs 4,500 crore Renault, as part of the first phase of its India plans, post the initial launch in mid-2011, plans to open 70 dealerships across the most important Tier-I and Tier-II cities by end-2013.

The sales and after-market service of its cars will be handled by Renault branded dealerships, with the initial dealerships being operational by mid-2011 in Tier-I cities.

Renault will continue to support M&M and the product through a license agreement and supply of key components, including the engine and transmission.

Mahindra to raise prices

Auto-maker Mahindra & Mahindra on Tuesday said it will raise the prices of its products across all categories in January due to increase in commodity rates.

"There will definitely be a price increase in January and we are finalising it at present... It will be across all categories (passenger and commercial vehicles)," said Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) Senior Vice-President (Sales and Customer Care, Automotive Sector) Arun Malhotra..

He, however, declined to comment on how much could be the price increase on M&M's models.

The prices of all raw materials, especially rubber and steel components, have gone up in recent times, he added.

The company on Tuesday showcased its latest utility vehicle 'Thar' in the National Capital. It is available for Rs 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Malhotra said the company will introduce a new pick-up truck above 1.2-tonnage carriage capacity within the first six months of the next year.

Earlier, another auto-maker Tata Motors was understood to have decided to increase prices of its passenger vehicle models, except Nano and Aria, by up to 1.5 per cent from January.

Volkswagen had said it would increase the prices of its small car Polo by over 2.9 per cent with effect from January 1, 2011.

Major car makers such as Hyundai Motor India and General Motors had also announced to increase the prices to offset the pressure from raw materials, including natural rubber, from next year.

Mahindra Thar DI 4x2 at Rs 4.47 lakh

Mahindra has launched the Thar, its much awaited offroader in Mumbai today. For those who have been waiting for it with baited breath, here is you chance for redemption. Mahindra have launched the Thar at a gobsmacking Rs 4.47 lakh for the DI 4x2 version (ex-Jaipur) and Rs 5.99 lakh for the CRDe 4x4 version.

The Thar will thus be available in two engine formats - DI and CRDe. The DI is aimed at the BS III markets, while the CRDe is aimed at BS IV markets. The DI's positioning is as a rural SUV, while the CRDe is aimed at the more young, yuppie crowd in metros who have more than just a passing interest in offroading.
The DI is the same tried and tested unit found on the Bolero and it produces about 63 bhp@3200 rpm and 18.2 kgm of torque at 1440 rpm. The CRDe on the other hand is the brute here. Powered by a more advanced 2.5 CRDe, again found on the Bolero and Xylo. Producing 105 bhp@3800 rpm and a staggering 25.2 kgm of torque from as low as 1800-2000 rpm, the Thar CRDe is the most powerful open-top SUV in the country. Both engines are mated to a rugged five-speed manual gearbox.

To help this vehicle go off-road is a 2.48:1 and 1.0:1, two-speed ratio manual transfer box. The Thar also has  provisions for air-conditioning, meaning it has a blower, vents, controls and ducting for a potential buyer to install his own air-conditioning. Available as a soft-top only for the moment, Mahindra has done its work in ensuring that the soft-top and the sealing for the soft-top is good enough to handle the air-conditioning.
Mahindra has made no attempt at hiding the fact that the Thar's inspiration has been its very own MM540/MM550 range of offroaders. Both these offroaders have achieved cult status today for their no-nonsense, reliable approach to offroading. The Thar looks not too different from the MM540 and hopes that this will help it achieve cult status too.
The Thar can seat seven and has an approach and departure angle of 46 degrees and 30 degrees respectively. It has a turning radius of 5.25 metres.
The Thar will first be launched in the cities of Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Mangalore and Cochin this month with the rest of the country in January 2011.

Toyota Etios Review - Finally!

Driving the car Toyota has engineered specifically for us - the Etios!

It’s been four years in the making. It has made the second-largest automotive manufacturer in the world go back to the drawing board again and again. It has made them do things they have never done before. At the end of it, Toyota has this to show, the Etios sedan (the hatchback follows next year). This is the car they have pinned their hopes on, to get the volumes in a country where car sales have been shooting through the roof.

While Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Ford and even General Motors have accelerated their activities in the country, Toyota has been slow and late in bringing in a mass-market model.

But try telling them that and they say that they cannot be hurried. They set their own pace. Well, that comes out of some sort of confidence, I would say. It’s the same sort of confidence they had when they introduced the Qualis in the country — all of us knew it was a dated vehicle, but that did not stop us from buying it, right? Even though it was a dinosaur in automotive terms, it was the best machine in its category. So: is the Etios worth the wait? Let’s find out what the Toyota for India is all about.

Oh, before we start, I would like to say that I didn’t get a chance to drive the car much. Toyota had organised the hatchback and the sedan to drive at a section of the Fuji Speedway in Japan and the time allotted for each journalist was the bare minimum. Plus, the controlled conditions on that rainy day meant it was just a brief feel of the car that we got. And apologies for the lousy pictures too. So you’ll have to wait for a proper road test in India to get a better idea of the Etios.

If you are working for Maruti Suzuki, you should be reading this whole report very carefully. That’s because both the Etios hatch and the sedan are aimed squarely at the Swift and Dzire. So what, you may say, considering the Nissan Micra, Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo are all targeting the best-sellers? What’s another competitor to the formidable Swift and Dzire, right? Yes, but this is Toyota and despite the multi-billion car recalls, Indians are unaffected and attach a premium image to the brand. And when it comes to product specifics, the Etios sedan has quite a few things the Dzire does not have. So are you paying attention? (Let’s stick to the sedan now, as I cannot tell you about the hatch because there’s an embargo on it).

Many people who have seen the car at the Auto Expo have commented that it looks like the Mahindra-Renault Logan. And they are not entirely wrong — it has that feel about it, especially when seen from the rear three-quarters... those triangular tail-lamps are to blame. Plus the straightforward waistline and headlamps also contribute a bit to it. But the Toyota looks a wee bit more flamboyant than the under-designed French car. The front grille is more elaborate and seems to be designed to evoke the face of the best-selling Innova and a large chrome strip running at the top of the bare bootlid will be a hit with us Indians (cue the Maruti Suzuki Dzire). Yeah, but don’t expect the Etios to win any beauty contests — it looks sober and is designed to be inoffensive rather than cause strong reactions. Unlike the Dzire which looks like the Swift with a boot (which it is), the Etios looks more complete as a three-box car and looks bigger too.
And that’s the feeling you get when you sit inside the car and that's one of the points it gets against the Dzire. Scooped out headliners and the tall seating give you that sense of space, while leg room as well as shoulder room at the rear are pretty decent too. The drive tunnel has been flattened out, so it does not cause discomfort to the passenger at the middle of the rear seat. The entire dash layout is adventurous for Toyota, with the central instrument console placement. In the day, it looks all right, but in the night, when you put on the headlamps, it is vastly improved and cheerful. The controls are all analogue, which is a bit surprising — I would expect a digital climate control in the top end version at least.

The quality of plastics is something that’s a bit of a disappointment, mainly because this is a Toyota product. It would be acceptable in a Suzuki, but not in a Toyota — even if it is a model that competes with a Suzuki. The glovebox is large, there are plenty of bottle holders and then some more, it has additional and very prominent AC vents that can cool the glove box as well, the steering wheel is large though a bit plasticy and there is only a single wiper. Yes, long after the W124 Merc and the Uno have become history, the Etios has only a single wiper. Though it has been designed for maximum coverage of the windscreen, it still leaves an unclean gap near the driver’s side of the A-pillar (the one benefit of it being a rainy day in Japan!) and I wonder whether it can handle our monsoons. Net net, the Etios looks as if it’s been built to a cost. It’s perhaps the cheapest car that Toyota has built, still our expectations from Toyota are sky-high!
Powering the front wheels of the Etios sedan is a 1500cc four-cylinder 16-valve DOHC petrol engine that develops 88.8 bhp at 5600 rpm and 13.5 kgm at 3000 rpm, which is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Yes, it is marginally more powerful than the Dzire petrol and torquey as well. The extra cubes means the engine is not stressed. Driving the car on the track, the benefits of the diesel-like torque come through — it is responsive at low revs and takes up the slack well, something which will make it driveable on our roads. The transmission is slick enough, but I didn’t have the chance to do some enthusiastic shifting, while gearing is yet to be seen.

The engine noise and road surface noise are a bit intrusive, and I hope Toyota does something about insulating the Etios. The electric power steering setup is easy and offers adequate feedback. Because the surface was smooth, I have no idea how well the Etios can soak up the bumps, but knowing Toyota, they would have engineered that aspect into it very well. We slalomed at moderate speeds at the track and the handling came through as quite sorted and the 185/60 15-inch rubber offered decent grip. Still, I would wait for a proper road test in India to understand how good the ride and handling qualities of the Etios are.
Putting together the EFC platform, as Toyota calls it, which stands for ‘Emerging markets Frontier Concept,’ has been a learning process for them. They have cut down on non-essential parts and made it as simple and low-cost as possible. Still, they cannot compromise to the extent that they’d have to leave the Toyota badge off the car. So the Etios is a well-engineered and relevant product for our country. It will offer decent value, despite possibly being pricier than the Rs 5 to 6.5 lakh range of the Dzire petrol - as we go to press, the car is yet to be launched. So was it worth the wait?
Considering it’s been a virtual monopoly of the Swift and the Dzire in their respective segments, I would say about time too.

Volkswagen Vento vs Hyundai Verna

Is there's anyone who is best known for a diesel sedan under Rs 10 lakh, with a right combination of performance and practicality, then it's Hyundai and their Verna that come to the top of most people's minds. And while the Verna has gone through a "Transform"ation recently, it now has to contend with a pretty strong competitor - the Volkswagen Vento.

For many, the Vento is nothing more than a Polo with a boot, but VW have worked their way in to ensure it gets a longer wheelbase and more interior room. In fact, room here is a tad better than the Verna, both for the front and rear seat occupants. On the outside, the Verna Transform is not something of sheer beauty and is a bit too radical for most people's tastes. The Vento, on the other hand has a nice balanced look, even though we'd have liked to see a more interesting tail lamp design.
Going back to the inside, it's the Vento who has a more interesting interior, while the Verna can be termed 'par for the course'. The overall feel of the materials of the Vento give you the impression of being of a much higher grade, while the Verna does have a lot of colours to provide relief. Beige is highly used for both, though it's a tad more in the Vento than the Verna.
The engines on both the cars are quite torquey. While the 1.5-litre diesel on the Verna has more power and is more refined, the one on the Vento is a tad bit torquier. Both will get to 100 kph in under 12 seconds, but it's the Vento that is a shade quicker. The 110 horsepower Verna simply loses out to the higher displacement, 104 bhp Vento on account of torque as well as gearing. The Vento has slightly shorter gearing which helps it get there quicker. Efficiency-wise, it is the Vento that scores marginally over the Verna in the combined cycle. But the Verna fights back by offering an automatic gearbox option, which the Vento currently doesn't offer.
Dynamically too, it is the Vento that feels more sure-footed and more predictable. It turns into corners better and rides quite well too. The Verna feels more comfortable on arrow-shot straight roads and a bit too nervous and understeery around corners. There's also more pitch and body roll in the car due to its soft suspension while ride quality is a bit more pliant here.
Even though the Verna's price tag of Rs 7.84 to 9.19 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) cannot hide the fact that the Vento (Rs 8.19-9.46 lakh) is a more superior car in terms of engine performance, dynamics, interiors and overall competence. The Verna also feels a half generation older when compared to its German competition and doesn't do anything spectacularly. In the end, the Vento overwhelmingly leaves the Verna behind.

Upcoming Cars in India

1. Chevrolet Beat LPG Coming in January 2011

Chevrolet Beat LPG
Expected in January 2011
Estimated price: Rs 4-5lakh
GM India has been one of the first automakers who have taken the green initiative in India. Chevrolet had launched the Optra CNG, then alternative fuel variant of the Spark. Recently, they had launched the Chevrolet Aveo CNG.

Now, the American auto giant plans to launch the LPG variant of the Beat in India by the end of 2010. The Beat LPG is currently in the final testing stage in the Indian conditions.

2.Tata Venture Coming in January 2011

Tata Venture
Expected in January 2011
Estimated price: Rs 4.5-6.5 lakhs
Tata Motors had displayed the Venture at the Auto Expo this year in New Delhi. The Venture is a seven-seater van which will be powered by a 1.4-litre diesel engine which churns out 70bhp and it is based on the Super Ace platform.  This is the tried and tested engine that came strapped in the Tata Indica for many years.

Tata Motors sure seems to be on its way to capturing a niche space in this segment, as currently there are no players besides Maruti whose vehicles the Omni and the Eeco, both, come with petrol engines only. Tata’s diesel powered engine should definitely prove advantageous as this comes at a time when there’s hardly any competition for the giant automobile manufacturer.

CarWale Team spotted one of the test mules of the Tata Venture. The test mules indicate that Tata has reached the final stage of testing the car and we believe it should be made available in the market by November 2010. This will be the first seven-seater with a diesel engine in this price range and we expect it to be a hit in the market. The Tata Venture is most likely to be priced between Rs 4.5-6.5lakhs.

3.Nissan Sunny Coming in Mid-2011

Nissan Sunny
Expected in Mid-2011
Estimated price: Rs 7lakh
The Nissan Micra is an important car for Nissan in India and the company has a lot resting on the success of the Micra. Nissan India have gone to great lengths by doing a lot of marketing activity in shopping malls and key consumer touchpoints to promote not just the upcoming Micra, but to also spread awareness and visibility of the Nissan brand. They have also managed to cross over a thousand bookings for the Nissan Micra last week and since Nissan India started production of the Micra in May earlier this year at their swanky facility in Chennai, they should be able to cope with the initial demand spike and deliver the cars quickly.

Now, Nissan will launch the Sunny by the end if the year. The Nissan Sunny should be available with a diesel engine from the Renault stable, the same engine that was used on Logan.

Design:

The Nissan Sunny will be based on the same Micra platform and will have parts in common. We have seen the Indica/Indigo, Swift/Swift DZire, Polo/Vento hatch/sedans combinations. Now, even Nissan joins the bandwagen.

Powertrain:

The Nissan Sunny will be powered by a 1.5-litre dCi, which is basically the same oilburner that powers the Renault Logan. Renault and Nissan have jointly invested in the Chennai plant, and the duo already have a joint venture and to share technology. Nissan already uses Renault engines on its X-Trail. This diesel powerplant is a 8-valve 1.5-litre dCi engine (code name K9K) and is Renault’s top selling engine with almost 900,000 units manufactured in 2008 (only in Spain and Turkey) and this engine is available with several power ratings (65bhp to 110bhp) in other markets. Renault claims the engine design to be simple, low friction and have a superior cost-to-performance ratio. The Micra sedan dCi engine powering the Mahindra Renault churns out 65bhp and a torque of 160Nm@2000rpm.

competition:
The Nissan Sunny will compete with the Mahindra-Renault Logan, Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire and the Tata Indigo Manza. All its competition are great value for money products, and are being offered in petrol and diesel variants.

Overall Evaluation:

The Nissan Micra sedan will be offered with a diesel engine. No questions can be raised on the efficiency of this engine, and the build quality of the Micra has been good. So Micra sedan should be a great product to own if Nissan prices it correctly.
Specs (Speculated)
Engine: 1.5-litre dCi
Power: 65bhp

4.Maruti Suzuki SX4 Diesel in Mid 2011

Maruti Suzuki SX4 Diesel
Expected in Mid 2011
Estimated price: Rs 9 lakh
Maruti Suzuki’s men were back in the form of the SX4 with a 1.6l engine powering the car with 101 horses. The SX4 design is suitable for Indian roads with its high ground clearance and 15-16 inch tyres. After the huge success of the diesel variants of the Swift and Dzire over their respective petrol versions, the company plans to roll out the SX4 diesel with the DDiS engine.

Suzuki SX4 was developed by Suzuki, however it is sold by Suzuki as well as Fiat (badged as Fiat Sedici). The SX4 is sold as a crossover in some of the European and North American car markets. The SX4 is sold in North American markets with AWD as a standard feature, whereas in the European it is optional. Also, the SX4 is offered with a 2.0-litre petrol engine in the North American markets.

Design:

The SX4 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign studio. The Suzuki SX4 was initially introduced as a five-door hatchback which was marketed as a crossover. The sedan was unveiled at the 2007 New York Auto Show and was later on launched in Japan, India and a few East european countries. The "SX 4" term was used by American Motors (AMC) for a sporty liftback model.

Engine:
After using the Fiat 1.3l multijet engine for its Swift and Swift Dzire, Maruti will continue to use the DDiS engines. In the European market, the SX4 is sold with 1.9-litre and 2.0-litre DDis engine options. We expect, Maruti to launch the SX4 diesel with a 1.6-litre DDis, and this should be Maruti's reply to the VW Vento diesel, which produces 105-bhp from a 1.6-litre oilburner.

Features:

The SX4 diesel is the twin of its petrol variant. There is no difference between the two except for their hearts.

Competitors/Overall Evaulation:

The main rivals of the SX4 will be its own petrol sibling, the Honda City, Fiat Linea, Ford Fiesta Hyundai Verna and the recently launched Volkswagen Vento. The SX4 has a huge plus with the Maruti brand having the largest after sales and service network and good ownership experience.

5. Nissan NV200 Coming in Early 2011

Nissan NV200
Expected in Early 2011
Estimated price: Rs 5-8lakh
Nissan could launch a MPV called NV200 for the Indian car market. Nissan plans to manufacture the NV200 in a joint venture with defence and commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland.

The Nissan NV200 is built on the modified Renault-Nissan B-Alliance platform and will have the 1.5dCi engine (the same engine block used on the Renault Logan). However, the NV200 will produce more power than the Logan.  This MPV could compete with the Toyota Innova and Mahindra Xylo.
Specs (Speculated)
Engine: 1.5-litre dCi engine
Power: 80-85bhp

6. Tata New Safari Coming in Mid-2011

Tata New Safari
Expected in Mid-2011
Estimated price: Rs 7-11 lakh

While most people have been saying that there’s a Tata Safari facelift around the corner, we have good reason to believe that the Safari which will roll out of Tata Motors early next year, will be the second product to be based on Tata’s all-new X2 platform. The first product on the X2 platform is the recently launched Tata Aria and we strongly believe that the Safari will be based on this significantly more advanced platform rather than just a facelift. For starters the X2 platform has several structural advantages right from the strong hydro-formed chassis sections and the more refined powertrain package which consists of the 2.2 Litre DiCOR engine with the dual-mass flywheel and the upgraded G76-Mark II gearbox.

With such extensive testing having been done for the X2 platform development in the Aria, the upcoming Safari will no doubt have significantly better ride and handling than the outgoing one. This also means that the Safari will come with four wheel disc brakes and all the electronic safety kit (ABS, EBD and ESP) when it is launched. Staying true to it’s off-road worthy nature; the new Safari will sport a selectable 4x4 mode which will give it better off-road prowess than the Aria currently has with its full-time All Wheel Drive. We also think that the new Safari will have a significantly more Land Rover like styling for the exterior. Perhaps the most significant difference, thanks to the new X2 platform is the fact that the spare tyre now sits underneath the vehicle like the Aria and not hinged to the rear tail-gate.

We hear there’s extensive high quality rugged body-side cladding on the Safari and the side still retains a very ‘Safari’ profile with the front and the rear receiving most of the styling attention. The front, we believe is a little more squared off as is the rear, and this will no doubt make the Safari look a lot more rugged and SUV-ish than it already is. The interiors are fresh and will follow a general theme as found in the Aria – which means that we’ll see simple clean interior lines as well as a more functional and better built interior. We’re quite looking forward to the new Safari soon and no doubt this will really be a better Safari to drive and own than ever before. Watch this space!
Specs (Speculated)
Engine: 2.2-litre DiCOR engine
Power:140bhp

Best Looking Motorcycles of India: My Top 10

A properly styled bike in most cases guarantees that the sales numbers will keep on ticking. As they say it "Well begun is half done" Personally to me, styling is what makes a bike more emotional and closer to the heart. In fact to me, styling of your bike defines what kind of person you are.

Although styling is a matter of personal taste.. and in most cases lies in the eyes of the beholder. But one can't argue against the fact that a bike has to look good from "every possible angle" to be called as one of the best styled bikes.

Also a bike need not be always "sporty" to be called good looking. Beauty can definitely be found in simplicity as well.

Note: Bikes like the Ninja 250R has not been included since it is an import assembled in India. Bikes like the Honda CBR250R and KTM 200 Duke have not been launched in India yet, therefore they do not find a place in the (2010) list below.

Bikes like the TVS Apache RTR and Hero Honda Hunk do not make it to the list because in terms of styling they have just followed the leader, i.e. the Bajaj Pulsar and do not bring anything novel in terms of styling.

Posted below are my Top 10 Best Styled Bikes of India.. till date.
10. Hero Honda Splendor

Styling of the Splendor has remained exactly the same (except the addition of alloy wheels and graphics changes) since 1994. This has actually helped the Splendor retain its simple/classic commuter looks. I like the styling of the Splendor. Kind of reminds me of the simpler days of my childhood.

09. Hero Honda Passion Pro APDV

The latest Hero Honda Passion Pro goes to how good graphics and intelligent use of color can make a bike which is essentially a commuter appear sporty and stylish. Once upon a time I used to loathe the Passion and used to call it just a bike with extra plastic. But the 2010 Passion Pro APDV is a decent job in styling.

08. Hero Honda Karizma R

The Karizma R was once the most desirable domestic motorcycle in India. Its fixed half fairing gave many deprived desi riders their first and nearest taste of riding a full faired sports bike. The “R” variant (2007) gave it new body stickers and a large belly pan which nearly makes the bike look like a full faired offering. Although the Karizma R is no longer as contemporary, it still is a decent looker.

07. Hero Honda CBZ (the original from 1998/99)

Ahh, my first bike. The bike which started my love affair with bikes. Although discontinued long back, the CBZ would still look much better than some styling disasters from the house of Hero Honda itself.

06. Yamaha RD350

The simple clean lines of the Yamaha RD350 does not exactly give away the kind of monster it was on the road. The 1980’s design still appeals to my heart like a favorite old song.

05. Bajaj Pulsar 180 UG II (Fear the Black Edition)

This bike made the “all black” paint scheme (found on every bike in India these days) popular in India. This was also the bike from which I started to admire and respect the Pulsar brand.

04. Yamaha FZ-16

When shown in the 2008 New Delhi Auto Expo, I did not imagine that this could be a production model. With its beefy fat tyres and body panels appeared more like a show concept model which usually never makes it into reality. The Yamaha FZ 16 was a rude jolt (in a very good way) to motorcycle design in India. The FZ16 was two generations ahead of any motorcycle in India in terms of styling.

The only reason why I have put it at a lower position in this countdown is because of the side panels which looks like an expanse of plastic to me and which could have been styled better.

03. Yamaha Fazer

As a concept, I do not approve of the Fazer as it is essentially the FZ-16 but with a 5 kg heavier half fairing. Performance wise the half fairing does nothing but cosmetically the Fazer does look very good.

02. Bajaj Pulsar 180 UG IV/200/220 (with bikini headlamp)

The most handsome Pulsars so far, that’s how I would rate them. The Pulsar 200 (now discontinued), the Pulsar 180 UG IV and the Pulsar 220 (with bikini headlamp) share the same chassis and nearly all body parts which makes them looking like identical triplets. In terms of proportion, these Pulsars are to me almost perfect and the styling has a timeless appeal to it.

Back in 2007, I might have thought the Karizma R to be a better looker than the Pulsar 200, but now in 2010 I would like to reverse my opinion.

01. Royal Enfield Classic 350/500

Wow..!! That was my first reaction when I saw the Classic for the first time. Classic British single from the 1950’s, this is what Royal Enfield should be in its purest form. The new Unit Construction Engine (UCE) also adds to the retro appeal. The new engine loses the exposed oil lines of the old cast iron engines and is a clean and pleasing looking unit.

The Royal Enfield Classic has a waiting period of around 10 months, which is currently the highest in the two wheeler industry. Just goes on to show what wonders a good design can do for a product and for a brand.
